BED BUGS & COCKROACHES

Picture

BED BUGS
The Alberta Residential Landlord Association (ARLA) worked closely with the City of Edmonton, Alberta Health Services and other stakeholders in 2010 to better understand the bed bug situation.  At this time the Edmonton’s Guide to Preventing and getting rid of Bed Bugs Safely was created.  Please click on the Bed Bug Guide image to the right to purchase a copy.

Cockroaches
What are they?
Cockroaches have been an insect pest for about four million years. There are more than 3,500 species around the world.

The German cockroach is one of the most common household cockroaches in the world. They are particularly fond of living in restaurants, food processing facilities, hotel rooms, and nursing homes. Although not very tolerant of the cold, this cockroach has been found in buildings as far north as Nunavut. Measuring about 1.3 cm to 1.6 cm (.51 to .63 inches) long, it is tan to light brown, with two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Roaches have wings, but are unable to fly.

Education

ARLA is of the view that education is key in addressing the problem of bed bugs. ARLA continues to encourage its members to educate themselves and their residents on bed bug recognition, prevention and elimination.

ARLA members should encourage non-punitive reporting of infestations and joint cooperation in any treatment process to ensure effective results.

ARLA wishes to see members and their residents comply with treatment recommendations and protocol to prevent and eliminate bed bugs by including regular suite monitoring for bed bugs and initiating professional pest control treatment to eliminate bed bug populations.
